TECH WEEKLY: Why Mercedes' W15 cockpit shift isn't just about making Hamilton more comfortable

Mercedes' W15 cockpit shift isn't just about making Hamilton more comfortable

One of the most notable features of Mercedes’ 2024 challenger, the W15, is a cockpit position around 10cm further back than on the previous two cars.

As illustrated here, this has been facilitated by a shorter and slightly higher fuel tank, which is situated behind the cockpit. Although this will have increased the centre of gravity height, especially on full tanks – the 2022-23 cars had a lower and longer fuel tank, helping keep the centre of gravity lower – there are other benefits out-weighing that in the all-round set of compromises necessary in the conception of any racing car.
